“The Color Purple”

“I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it.”

                                                                                                    “The Color Purple”, Alice Walker

This isn’t exactly “in a field somewhere”; there ain’t no lavender (or much of anything else) growing in this place.  This is just purple and gold badlands in Arizona’s Petrified Forest NP.  Still, a hard place to pass by without doing a double-take on the purple hills and the gold valley.

Nope, no filters. And not a single pixel was harmed in the making of this picture! Actually, the gold color is from pieces of petrified wood that get washed down from these hills. I’m not sure about the purple – must be some kind of mineral layer or something. But it’s definitely purple. Don’t see a whole lot of that here in western NY…….

Looks a bit “other-worldly.” If one of NASA’s rovers were setting in the scene it wouldn’t be that surprising.

“Other-worldly” gets it about right, I think. I figure that some of the conspiracy folks who think that the lunar landings were staged might have gotten their ideas from places like this. You walk through these things and you begin to wonder where the “real” world went.
