The Runaway

The Runaway (1570, EM1, 5-30-14)

What would we do without kids?  Those unpredictable, full of energy, out-of-control, obnoxious, photogenic kids.  Who else can provide images like this, where a young mother has brought her two pre-school youngsters to the lake to feed stale bread to the seagulls (or ducks or swans or whatever else is floating around in the inlet)?  Where Junior decides to take off on his own, running down the break-wall towards a possible unscheduled dip in a very cold lake, causing Mommy to frantically give chase, while the younger sister stares in amazement, still sucking on her pink pacifier.  And why, by the way, does the toddler in the pacifier-matching  pink shirt still have one of those things to suck on, anyway?  Aren’t we a little old for that?

Fear not.  She caught the little bugger about 2 seconds later.  No harm, no foul.  The excitement was over, leaving me to wonder why she didn’t have a leash on the kid.  That thought was soon followed by an immense sense of relief that I no longer have to worry about caring for munchkins in this age group.  Heck, if it was me chasing the little guy he’d probably have made it to the end of the break-wall and he’d still be swimming toward Canada.  And I’ll bet he didn’t even have his passport with him……….

Thanks, Cedric. It was a very short “story” but it was fun to watch!
