Dark Passage

Dark Passage (7608)

“Insanity in individuals is rare – but in groups, parties, nations and epochs it is the rule.”

“If you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”

                                                                                         Friedrich Nietzsche

Once again we’ve arrived at the winter solstice – the shortest, darkest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.  Here in western NY it means we’ll get about 9 hours of possible sun.  “Possible” being the operative word since we rarely see the sun on the first day of winter.  Today will be no exception.  The good news, of course, is that for the next 6 months – or until the summer solstice – the days in this half of the world will be gradually getting longer as we tilt back towards the sun.

If the start of winter isn’t depressing enough, some people got it in their heads that the world would end today, too.  You know, the end of the Mayan calendar and all of that bogus nonsense.  Well, everything appears to be still here.  What a surprise.  Enough said about that little bit of insanity……..

Speaking of insanity, the NRA decided to have a news conference today so that they could finally chime in on how to end gun violence in this country.  Easy, said Wayne LaPierre (the NRA’s chief lobbyist).  We just need more armed people walking around.  The way to deal with a “bad man with a gun”, he said, is to have a “good man with a gun” nearby.  Perfect logic.  And since he took no questions at the end, it wasn’t really a “news conference”.  Nope.  Just another silly NRA commercial.

If NRA news conferences aren’t at least as depressing as the start of winter, we’re still edging closer to the so-called fiscal cliff.  What appeared to be a reasonable deal earlier this week has evaporated into nothingness.  Poof.  Gone.  As is most of Congress (headed home for the holidays).   They’ll worry about all this stuff later.  Like maybe on New Year’s eve or something.  Why worry about it now?

So what is the country getting for Christmas this year?  Another downgrade in our credit rating, probably.  Which means higher interest rates.  Not to mention piles and piles of new guns.  It seems the demand for automatic assault weapons has risen dramatically since last Friday.

If I were Santa I think I’d be a little worried.  Delivering stuff up in Canada is probably pretty safe.  But as soon as he crosses that border heading south tracers are going to light up the sky.  The poor guy will get shot down (by “good men with guns”) before he gets to Detroit……….

Yes, not a great way to make the national news feeds. It’s very strange watching the national NBC broadcast and seeing chaotic scenes from a few miles away. It’s an area I go to often with my camera.

Thanks, Mark. There’s nothing I enjoy more than exploring the washes and slot canyons of the Colorado Plateau. We’ve got nothing like them here in the northeast.

Yes, waiting patiently to see how the House is going to vote today……….
